Mercedes c350e EV charging guide

The luxury brand's first plug-in hybrid electric vehicle offering

Introduced to Australia and NZ in 2017, the Mercedes  C350E was the first plug in hybrid electric car or PHEV to be sold by Mercedes. With its relatively small 6.38kwh battery and 2 litre turbo 4 cylinder petrol engines the car were a radical departure from the petrol and diesel vehicles typically produced by Mercedes.

It's also a good looker, with the nice lines and smooth Mercedes look they've become so popular for. But, don't be fooled into thinking this is an EV that's all style and no substance!

How long to charge a Mercedes c350e hybrid

As EV drivers ourselves, we know that having fast and reliable EV charging at your home and workplace for your Mercedes C350e is essential to having a smooth and enjoyable electric car charging experience.

Depending on the market and year the Mercedes C350E is equipped with either a single Type1 (J1772) or Type 2 (Mennekes) ev charger port.  The onboard charger is rated to 3.3kw. When upgrading your EV charging cable or wall unit, check which connector you have before ordering; if you're not sure, give us a call and we'll walk you through it.

How to charge your Mercedes c350e in public and at home

When you receive your Mercedes C350E there'll usually be a charging cable included, so why should you upgrade to something more substantial?

Generally, the ev charger cables that come with your Mercedes C350e are the slowest way to charge your electric car; which is why they're generally referred to as 'granny charger'. This means that while the portable charger supplied by your dealer great for overnight charging, they're not always the best option for daytime charging in between the work commute, school run or other trips. We would therefore recommend upgrading to a 7kW wallbox or Zappi solar aware electric car charger so that you have more range more often. This will mean there will be less reason to use the petrol engine to get around.

How to charge your Mercedes c350e from a public J1772 Type 1 electric car charger

If your Mercedes C350e electric car already has a type 1 or J1772 charge port then, bar enrolling on ChargePoint (if required), you're all set. Simply plug in your car and start charging  up!All chargepoint and Type 1 or J1772 chargers have a cable attached so there's no need to adapt or plug in any ev charger adaptors or electric car cables.

However, some Mercedes c350e cars have Type 2 connector so you will need a Type 1 to type 2 adaptor to get charge from these public charging stations.

How to charge your Mercedes c350e from a public Type 2 Mennekes charging station

There is a trend for public charge points to be universal; this means the point has no in-built cable. The result is reduced maintenance and damage, as well as reduced liability for the owner of the station. All universal or untethered public charging stations are Type 2 or Mennekes

If there is no permanently cable attached to the charger then there is less risk of it being driven over or generally being abused. Think air hose in a servo.  They are otherwise known as BYO cable chargers.

If your car has the type 2 connector then you will need a  Type 2 to Type 2 cable which will charge your Mercedes C350e at up to 3.3kw or 20 km for every hour of charge.

If your car has the type 1 connector then you will need a  Type 2 to Type 1 cable which will charge your Mercedes C350e at up to 3.3kw or 20 km for every hour of charge.
